Three Airsoft Gun Parts That Impact Range, Accuracy, and FPS

Arguably, you could replace most any airsoft gun part to improve performance, specifically range, accuracy, or muzzle velocity.

But these four will make some of the biggest impacts. Here’s why and how,  and where you can get replacement airsoft gun parts at great prices.

The Hop-Up Bucking

The hop-up bucking is a small piece of rubber that contacts the BB before it enters the barrel. It imparts spin which creates lift and spin stabilizes the BB as it travels through and out the barrel.

The type of bucking you choose (as well as the angle) will depend on the airsoft gun you’re upgrading.

In general, softer hop-up buckings are more suitable for lower-FPS airsoft guns, like airsoft pistols.

The flipside is also true; harder buckings are more suitable for faster airsoft guns, like airsoft rifles and AEGs.

There are also special hop-up buckings you can get that stay softer in the cold, making them perform better at lower temperatures. Keep this in mind too.

The Inner Barrel

The inner barrel will also have a pronounced effect on airsoft gun range and accuracy – mostly the latter.

One of the best upgrades you can make is to a tight-bore inner barrel with an inner diameter just a few fractions of a mm wider than the BB – such as a 6.02mm tight-bore barrel.

A tight-bore barrel will better restrict the path of the BB as it travels along the barrel, and some even create a cushion of air around the BB as it exits the muzzle, to stabilize it.

Also, not all tight-bore barrels are created equal. While brass is alright, it’s subject to corrosion which will hinder accuracy.

High-quality, polished stainless steel barrels are better.

The Motor

The motor drives the power of an AEG, and there are two basic types: high-speed and high-torque motors.

High-torque motors reach their maximum speed quickly, whereas high-torque motors enable a higher rate of fire. Either can be a suitable upgrade depending on what your goals are.

Here’s a trick though, for reference. If you have a stronger spring, go with a high-torque motor (see below). The high-torque motor provides better power to compress a heavier spring, resulting in greater muzzle velocity.

If rate of fire (ROF) is your goal, go with a high-speed motor, which offers a higher-cyclic rate for that very purpose.

All else being equal, opt for an AEG motor that has powerful rare earth magnets, like neodymium magnets.

The Spring

Last but not least, consider upgrading the spring in your airsoft gun’s gearbox.

The spring is the component that actually stores and releases the power, compressing the piston that delivers the air pressure to the BB, forcing it through the hop-up and out of the barrel.

For some airsoft guns, replacing a spring is involved and requires breaking down the gearbox. Others, such as select Arcturus Airsoft AEGs, are prefabricated with quick-change spring systems that enable easier upgrades.

This is also an airsoft gun part that, even if you don’t upgrade it for the purpose of a power enhancement, should be replaced periodically as springs are often the first parts to wear out on airsoft guns.
