Research findings

To sum up the results, the study notes that children cared at daycare are better behaved and seem to have picked up some have developed some very useful socializing skills than those that are cared for in their home setting.

How childcare impacts your child’s growth
One of the authors of the study Maria Melchior noted that daycare can have a long-term impact in children especially by playing a key role in their development into adolescence. She says, “Access to high-quality childcare in the first years of life may improve children’s emotional and cognitive development, prevent later emotional difficulties and promote pro-social behaviors.”

About the study
The study closely observed around 1,428 in France from the time they were just 12 months till they reached the age of 8 years. During this period, the study analyzed the children’s emotional development. This was measured by surveying the parents continuously regarding eh conduct of their children. Aspects like hyperactivity, ability to make friends and other social skills were considered.

The variables considered for the study were the children trained in childcare, children who were cared by an independent caregiver at home, and children who grew up in a regular home setting.

The study found that daycare has shown a “positive impact on children’s academic readiness, as well as cognitive, language and pre-academic skills.” The study concludes that the children who attended daycare are found to have picked up some commendable behavioral and social skills which gave them a definite advantage in their lives.

Some downsides explained
One of the common complaints about daycare is that the children at daycare get sick very often. According to 2010 study by The Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, the occurrences of ear and respiratory infections in children attending daycare is 62% more than in the children cared at home settings. However, it is also noted that such children are less prone to sickness in their elementary schools as they have developed better immunities in them.
