The G&G Combat Machine Raider has long been a popular AEG. It features a durable polymer receiver, high-quality internals (including a full-metal, upgradeable gearbox), a tight-bore barrel, and a long-type motor that’s powerful enough to generate muzzle velocities close to 400 FPS.
The G&G Raider is also a winner (and has been very popular) because of its price point. At under $200, there aren’t a lot of AEGs that can compete with it on price and performance.
But the G&G Combat Machine Raider is also no spring chicken. It’s been around quite a while – long enough for other contenders to get close to the throne, even if they don’t approach the price point.

Arcturus X C.A.T. AR-15
Only a shade more expensive than a G&G Raider, the Arcturus X C.A.T. AR-15 offers excellent performance at a highly competitive price point.
This Arcturus Airsoft AEG features durable yet lightweight aluminum alloy and polymer construction, a threaded outer barrel, a handguard with Picatinny and M-LOK rail slots, and a folding stock.
But the real power comes from its internal configuration. It boasts a split, Version 2-style gearbox that allows for easy takedowns; it also allows users to change the spring for greater power, without completely disassembling the AEG.
It’s also Li-Po ready and features 12-position tunable sector gears and mechanical pre-cocking. Out of the box it offers FPS ratings between 320 and 350 FPS so it’s a little lower on power compared to the G&G Raider but that can easily be remedied.
It also features a highly realistic 30/130 round variable-cap mag that can be capped to boost realism.
Arcturus AK74U
The Arcturus Airsoft AK74U is a far cry from the M16 and AR-inspired AEGs that are so popular in airsoft, but it is a great AEG nonetheless.
Like the X C.A.T., the AK74U features extremely durable construction, with a stamped steel receiver and anodized, CNC aluminum parts, including the outer barrel, handguard and stock.
It’s also powerful and modular, with an upgradable Version 3 zinc die-cast gearbox and steel powder metallurgy gearset. This AEG also features a quick spring release.
It comes with 2 variable cap mags, features a side optics mount, and even a top Picatinny rail for mounting airsoft attachments.
It’s also a little more powerful than the X C.A.T., at least out of the box, and is capable of 380-400 FPS muzzle velocities.
