Tips for Choosing the Best Backpack Vacuum Cleaner

Let’s get some things out of the way before we start. Backpack vacuum cleaners can be heavy, they can be bulky and large and they can be expensive. However, chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re not looking for a backpack vacuum for tidying up the pantry and removing a little bit of dust. Don’t get us wrong – there are backpack vacuums out there that are great for domestic use – but the realm of the backpack vacuum is in commercial cleaning.

That’s where they shine and do they ever shine. Backpack vacuums can save your back, keeping you from stooping over and bending over conventional models. Generally speaking, they have a fairly good capacity and don’t need to be emptied out too frequently. They also come with lots of cool – and useful – cleaning tools to make your job in commercial cleaning easier. Best of all, some commercial backpack vacuums are seriously powerful.

So, if you’re in it for a commercial model, here are a few things to look for.

1. Go lightweight if you can

One of the most important things to consider in a backpack vacuum is the lightweight design and the ergonomics of the model. One of the things these were designed for was for portability and comfort – and if that vacuum doesn’t save your back, you’re losing out on some of the value that could come wrapped up with it.

Also, since, you know, you need to carry these things around when you’re using them, a lightweight design is your friend.

2. Get that telescoping wand (or at least one with good reach)

You also need to be able to reach the floor, so look for a backpack vacuum that has a telescoping wand or at least a long one. Most of them will have some sort of collapsibility feature, so this shouldn’t be too hard to find.

3. Prioritize power, capacity, and HEPA backpack vacuums

This is a big one. You’re cleaning a commercial space, so power and features are important. For example, many backpack vacuums come with multiple power settings, can be used as multi-surface vacuums, and feature HEPA filtration systems. In order to meet the requirements to be considered a HEPA filter, a filter must remove at least 99.97% of particles that are .3 microns or smaller. The better the filter, the less frequently you’ll have to replace it and the better the vacuum itself will run.

4. Make sure it comes with the right cleaning tools and attachments

One more thing to look for is a backpack vacuum cleaner that comes with the right floor tools and other attachments. Cleaning a corner? Get a corner nozzle. Need to get in a tight space? A crevice nozzle will serve you well. Naturally, it had better come with attachments for tiled and carpeted floors as well!

There’s your crash course in backpack vacuums but consider it no more than that – a crash course.
