The Aldila Ascent UL 35: An Excellent Titleist Driver Shaft for a GT4

The GT4 is one of the more popular Titleist clubs on the market right now, but as you may know, much of the performance of an excellent golf club lies behind the shaft you pair with it.

One of the shafts that Titleist specifically recommends for the GT4 is the Aldila Ascent UL 35. But as Titleist driver shafts, what makes these perform? Here’s some insight.

A Crash Course on the GT4

The GT4 is one of Titleist’s most aggressive drivers ever, with a focus on spin reduction, which is further refined thanks to the club’s fore and aft spin adjustability.

It also sports Titleist’s Thermoformed Crown, an extremely lightweight design crafted from “Proprietary Matrix Polymer,” as well as “Split Mass Construction” consisting of advanced internal weighting that increases mass distribution, further stabilizing the clubhead and reducing spin.

On top of that, this clubhead sports an advanced aerodynamic shape along with a “Speed Ring VFT” face that, without getting too into the details, is designed to produce consistently fast ball speeds over a wider area of the club face.

Now the Aldila Ascent UL 35

Now that we know the GT4 is a spin-killing machine with a lightweight, aerodynamic design, what is it about the Aldila Ascent UL 35 that could make it a suitable Titleist driver shaft?

Quite a bit, as it turns out. The main feature behind the performance of the Aldila Ascent UL 35 is an ultra-lightweight design; the UL 35 tips the scales at just 41g.

This helps golfers with slower swing speeds attain higher clubhead velocities – but it gets better. These shafts sport “Focused Mass Technology” consisting of heavy, tungsten-infused prepreg in the butt section which stabilizes the shaft and counterbalances the swing weighting.

On top of that, the shafts in the Aldila Ascent line are curiously high-launching shafts – which interestingly can pair beautifully with the spin-killing abilities of the Titleist GT4.

High-launch, low spin is a curious combination, but for some players, it is also a vital one. Whereas some players crave a higher spin for greater carry distance, for those with greater control, it can be a bit of a burden.

To be specific, while extra spin does, in some limited cases, extend carry distance by generating a little lift under the ball, it also has a pointed potential to increase shot dispersion and rollout once the ball is on the ground.

For players for whom this is a concern, a higher-launching shaft paired with a low-spin clubhead like the GT4 is a viable solution.

The Aldila Ascent, with its extreme lightweight design, and the GT4, with its relatively forgiving and speed-boosting club face, naturally pair well.

But furthermore, the Aldila Ascent UL 35 produces a high launch angle and enables faster clubhead speeds thanks to its lightweight design.

Both of these things help improve carry distance, while the spin-killing attributes of the GT4 help prevent spin from complicating accuracy.

For some players, it’s the perfect one-two combo. The shaft provides greater carry distance thanks to a higher launch angle while the head actively works against producing excess spin.

And that is, in a nutshell, while these can be excellent Titleist driver shafts, at least for players with slightly slower swing speeds who don’t appreciate extra spin.
