Ranger Cosplay: Which LOTR Sword Replicas to Carry?

Fans of Middle-earth have always loved the ranger gear, and often curate LOTR sword replicas and arms to cosplay as their favorite ranger: Strider. But some also want to play another ranger in the books and films: Faramir.

To fully equip yourself as a Ranger of Middle-earth, whether you’re stepping into Aragorn’s boots as a Dúnedain of the North or donning the green of Faramir’s Ithilien Rangers, you’ll need the right swords and gear that reflect both the films’ aesthetics and the lore of Tolkien’s world.

Rangers of the North: Aragorn’s Kit

The Rangers of the North are the scattered remnants of the Dúnedain, descendants of the ancient Númenóreans. They serve as guardians of Eriador, wandering the wilds to protect villages and travelers from threats. Their style is shaped by long, solitary patrols, with gear meant for survival in remote areas.

For Aragorn’s sword kit, there are two primary blades seen in the films: Andúril, the reforged sword of Elendil, and his earlier Ranger sword. Before the events of The Return of the King, Aragorn wields a functional longsword with a simple crossguard and worn leather grip, suited for travel and combat.

Once Andúril is reforged from the shards of Narsil, it becomes his main weapon: a symbol of his royal lineage as well as a battle-ready blade. In addition to his main sword, Aragorn carries a hunting knife, seen strapped across his back, ideal for close combat and utility use.

Film Aragorn also inherits Boromir’s leather bracers, which are purely defensive for the forearm and practical for sword work. His sword belts and scabbards are functional, with weathered leather to match the rest of his rugged kit.

Ithilien Rangers: Faramir’s Kit

The Ithilien Rangers are part of Gondor’s military, specializing in stealth and ambush tactics in the wild, particularly against enemy forces moving through Ithilien’s forests. They’re trained soldiers under a command structure, unlike the more independent Northern Rangers.

Their gear is uniform: green cloaks for camouflage, leather armor for light protection, and standardized Gondorian arms.

Faramir’s primary weapon in the films is a Gondorian longsword. It is a straight, double-edged blade with the White Tree emblem on the hilt or pommel, matching Gondor’s formal military style.

Unlike Aragorn’s weather-beaten ranger sword, Faramir’s has a cleaner, more standardized appearance, reflecting its origin from an armory rather than personal heritage. Faramir also uses a Gondorian longbow, marking a key difference from Aragorn’s kit. The bow allows the Ithilien Rangers to strike from concealment before closing in with swords.

While both groups carry knives, Faramir’s would be a standard-issue sidearm rather than a unique or symbolic piece like Aragorn’s. The Ithilien Rangers’ equipment is geared toward coordinated skirmishes rather than lone survival.

Comparing the Arms

Aragorn’s weaponry reflects a wandering warrior; functional, personal, and adapted for varied terrain. His swords carry deep historical meaning, especially Andúril, which embodies his claim to Gondor’s throne. His knife is versatile, and his armor is minimal to maximize mobility.

Faramir’s kit is built for organized guerrilla warfare. The Gondorian longsword is uniform and practical for melee combat, while the bow is essential for ranged engagements. The emphasis is on blending into the environment, striking first, and maintaining formation discipline.

Completing Your Gear with LOTR Sword Replicas

To complete a Ranger of the North cosplay or reenactment, you’d need a ranger sword (or Andúril for post-reforging), hunting knife, weathered scabbard, and optional bow. For Ithilien Rangers, the essentials are a Gondorian longsword, longbow, quiver, and standardized armor pieces.

In both cases, pairing the correct LOTR sword replicas with the right clothing or costume, creates the authentic Ranger look in Middle-earth. Choosing between them depends on whether you want to embody the lone, hidden king or the loyal captain of Gondor.
