PG/VG Balance and Sub Ohm Tanks: What You Should Know

For vapers that build or at least customize their own mods, every part matters. Getting serious about customizations means getting an education on adjustable airflow control, mesh coils versus standard coils, tank capacity, sub-ohm vape tanks, and of course, PG and VG ratio in vape juices.

Let’s take a closer look at the fusion of these last two elements: that is, what is a sub-ohm tank, how does it affect the vaping experience, and does it matter what sort of vape juice you use with one?

What Is a Sub Ohm Tank?
Sub-ohm vape tanks are tanks that contain a coil that offers less than one ohm of electrical resistance. Typically, vape mods with lower-resistance coils are paired with higher-wattage batteries because the low resistance allows more electrical energy to flow through the coils at a greater rate and vapers use these parts to get higher power from their devices.

All else considered the lower resistance allows the vape tank’s coils to heat up faster, producing thicker vapor and more powerful flavors.

Sub-ohm vaping carries some benefits for certain vapers. Vapers that prefer thick, intense clouds, potent flavors, and more powerful nicotine hits tend to gravitate towards sub-ohm vaping and use stronger batteries, too.

But do all e-liquids perform the same with sub-ohm vape devices?

Why Does the Balance of PG and VG Matter [and What Ratio Is Best for Sub-Ohm Vaping?]
There are two main constituents in vape juices that produce vapor. These are PG, or propylene glycol, and VG, or vegetable glycerin.

It is generally accepted that PG is a better carrier of nicotine and flavor than VG, so blends with more PG are typically more powerful. Users also report that PG produces a more powerful throat hit that some vapers appreciate.

VG, on the other hand, produces bigger, thicker clouds and a smoother hit than high PG blends.

The key lies in the balance. Because sub-ohm coils heat up quickly and deliver a lot of power with stronger batteries, most vapers agree that the blends that contain more VG are more suitable.

The reason for this may be that with sub-ohm vaping, higher PG is not necessary to deliver a stronger throat hit and nicotine dose. Some vapers also feel that blends that contain more VG produce smoother hits and even more intense clouds with sub-ohm devices.

Opinions vary, but some sources suggest that 70/30 (VG/PG) blends are optimal for sub-ohm vape devices.

However, it’s important not to take it too far. There are 100% VG juices, but despite the fact that these will produce huge clouds, even with a sub-ohm device, some vapers think they just don’t carry flavor well enough.

On the flip side, juices that are too high in PG tend to produce hits that are too harsh when used with sub-ohm vaping.

Somewhere between 70/30 as high as 80/20 (VG/PG) is best for most vapers. To find your perfect spot, however, you may want to try a few different blends and see what offers you the best experience.
