Is the Sage 5 the Best Spyderco Knife Ever?

Let’s just get one thing out of the way right quick. There are many great Spyderco pocket knives, folding and fixed. So picking one “best” Spyderco pocket knife is not going to be easy.

That being said, the Sage 5 is a great one, and there are no bones about that. Let’s take a closer look at why this just might be one of the best Spyderco knives out there.

Here Are the Things That Make It One of the Best Spyderco Knives

If you think the Sage 5 might be the best Spyderco knife, but need to qualify the statement, here are some arguments you can throw into rotation.

  • Full-flat grind: The Sage 5 boasts a full-flat grind, which results in a very keen edge and a blade that slices like a champ. However, this is not the most compelling argument because most Spyderco knives also have a full-flat grind.
  • Naturally ambidextrous (and lighter): The Spyderholes (Spydieholes) of the Sage 5 are naturally ambidextrous, and unlike thumb studs, they not only don’t add weight, but actually remove some. Plus they’re fun to use.
  • Great, but simple, ergs: The handle profile of the Sage 5 indexes naturally and is comfortable to hold in a variety of grips, without hot spots. And while there might not be a deep choil, as there is in other models, the thing is sound and secure in the grip.
  • Great, but simple, blade profile: This is another one that a lot of other Spyderco knives have but it still makes the Sage 5 great: a leaf-shaped blade that is stout and sturdy yet still capable of executing tasks that require precision and fine control.
  • Solid steel: You can get the Sage 5 in S30V, a carbide-rich super steel that, despite being fairly hard to sharpen, will raise and hold a wickedly sharp edge. It’s also highly corrosion resistant which is another thing to love.
  • A discreet pocket clip: The Sage 5 sports a wire pocket clip, which is not just unintrusive, but which is very discreet. This makes it not only more comfortable to carry, but more prudent to practice carry in areas where there are a lot of people and in which a large knife might stick up.
  • Carbon fiber handle scales: You can get the Sage 5 with carbon fiber scales which are lightweight, require little maintenance, and which offer a solid grip in a wide range of conditions.
  • The price: There are some pretty expensive Spyderco pocket knives out there, but at least the Sage 5 won’t break the bank. You can get one in the neighborhood of around $150 or so.
  • Variety: While the S30V version with carbon fiber scales is a solid choice, there are versions with MagnaCut and other steels, as well as FRN scales, in a variety of colors. As with so many other Spyderco knives, you can get what appeals to you.

This is not a complete list of the reasons that the Sage 5 is possibly the best Spyderco knife out there, but it is definitely a good place to start.
