American Eagle .223: Practical Uses

American Eagle .223 is consistent, accurate even at long distances, and reliable. It’s also relatively affordable. That makes it valuable for shooters looking for lots of different things. If you’re into the following disciplines, this might be a great round for you.

High-Volume Target Shooting

Due mainly to two things, this American Eagle .223 is a great choice for high-volume target shooting: reliability and affordability. It’s been tested to remain reliable in a variety of action types and under different conditions, and the low cost just makes the deal that much better. If you enjoy range therapy, this is a solid choice.

Drilling

Drilling is like high-volume target shooting but with a purpose. That means cost is a factor here. However, if you drill with ammo that is not reliable and not supremely accurate, you’re counteracting the purpose of the drill. This American Eagle .223 checks all the boxes and is perfect for drilling.

Training, Teaching New Shooters

It’s the cartridge, not the specific round itself, that’s the winner here. The .223 Remington is a great beginner cartridge because it is manageable, easily accessible, lightweight, affordable, and not intimidating. It also does not produce a lot of recoil which makes it an exceptional option for introducing beginners to the world of centerfire shooting.

Steel Shooting

This round can be a good option for steel shooting at intermediate ranges (although there are better ones out there for longer distances as .223 can be hard to hear a long way off). Just make sure you use AR500 steel that’s at least ⅜” thick. Also, not all .223 is good for this. Avoid M855 and other green tip 5.56 because it will blow through thin steel at close ranges.

Competition

Accurate and reliable, this American Eagle .223 is an excellent option for close and intermediate competitions involving an AR rifle (or another rifle in the same chambering).

Long-Distance Shooting

The accuracy, low-cost, and overall performance of this .223 make it a good bet, but the cartridge in general is one of the best of all for long distance shooting. The .223 exhibits relatively low wind drift and minimal drop, even at long distances. It is a straight, flat shooter.

What Isn’t It Good For?

There are two things for which you should not use this American Eagle .223. Defensive applications and hunting. The bullet is not designed for expansion and should not be used for these disciplines.
