About the Cummins ISX Engine and Emissions Reduction

Development of the original Cummins ISX began way back in 1998. The modern ISX is a workhorse that replaced the Cummins N14 in 2001, when EPA regulations tightened and made the N14 effectively obsolete.

But the Cummins ISX is not. In fact, Cummins actually pioneered technology with this model and they remain some of the most popular engines on the road today. Cummins ISX engines are found not only in heavy-duty trucks, but also in motorhomes, RVs, fire engines, and emergency service vehicles.

Take, for instance, the fact that Cummins pioneered the EGR cooler system in diesel engines; the ISX was one of the first diesel engines to use such a type of system. The EGR, or “exhaust gas recirculation” cooler system recirculates exhaust gas back into the engine’s intake, reducing harmful NOx emissions.

By 2006, the Cummins ISX started to feature an SCR, or “selective catalytic reduction” system. This system injects urea, which contains ammonia, into the exhaust stream, which reacts with the NOx particles, converting them into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas.

Cummins also raised the bar when it started to incorporate diesel particulate filters (A.K.A. DPFs or DPF filters) into its ISX engines.

While Cummins did not invent the DPF (that honor belongs to Peugeot) it was relatively quick to adopt this technology and the revolutionary advantages it could bring to the world of diesel emissions reduction.

This component of the diesel exhaust aftertreatment captiures soot and ash, then burns off the soot (which still contains potential energy) through a process called regeneration, which completes combustion. This harnesses additional energy and significantly reduces diesel emissions.

In addition to the introduction of a Cummins ISX DPF filter into the design of the ISX engine, the model has undertaken additional improvements with respect to diesel emissions reduction.

For instance, in order to meet changing EPA regulations, in 2010, Cummins redesigned the ISX to include a single overhead camshaft, replacing the dual overhead camshaft of the earlier ISX15. Cummins also began to utilize a common rail fuel system.

This system is capable of distributing and storage diesel fuel under extreme pressure and the engine’s ECM (engine control module) enables the activation of each fuel injector up to five times per combustion cycle.

This, in turn, creates better fuel economy and further reduces emissions, a benefit for all parties involved as it substantially improves efficiency.

Together, these and other Cummins ISX specifications and features improve efficiency and fuel economy while cutting back on emissions. In addition to the single overhead camshaft system, ECM, EGR, DPF, and high-pressure fuel injector system, the Cummins ISX also features an updated crankcase ventilation system, integrated electronic controls, and a variable geometry turbocharger that boosts power and control.

These features result in a Cummins diesel engine that is extremely efficient, powerful, and reliable – as well as low maintenance. More recent Cummins ISX engines can apparently run up to 15,000 miles without engine oil or filter changes.
