A Push Button Automatic Knife Might Be for You If…

Let’s just say you’re in the market for a new knife, but aren’t sure if an assisted opener, a push button automatic knife, or some typical folder with no deployment mechanism is for you.

Well, if any of the following 5 conditions applies to you, you might be a good candidate for a push button automatic knife.

  • You have had trouble with the learning curve associated with assisted openers and conventional pocket knives.

Let’s just face an unpleasant truth. It’s hard for some people to learn how to effectively deploy typical pocket knives, regardless of whether they have thumb studs or thumb holes or even flipper tabs. Even with an assisted opener, the truth is there’s some skill involved. With a push button automatic knife, there’s basically no learning curve. It takes all of a few seconds to learn how to deploy the knife.

  • You want a knife that you can open and close with one hand.

It goes without saying that you can deploy a push button automatic knife with one hand. But if you get a double-action auto, you’ll actually be able to retract the blade with one hand as well. That gives some autos a serious edge in situations in which one handed use is critical.

  • Speed of deployment is critical for you.

Some users can deploy conventional pocket knives with lightning rapidity, but effectively anyone can do the same with an auto with no skill at all. And, in most cases, an automatic knife will deploy more rapidly than a conventional knife anyway.

  • You know the regulations are permissible in your area.

There are some areas in the country in which automatic knives are not legal to own, and others where they may be legal to own but where they are not legal to carry. If you know your jurisdiction is more permissible than others, an auto might be a good option for you.

  • You like the cool factor.

Lastly, some people just like automatics for the cool factor and that’s fine too. It’s definitely the case that autos are highly fidget friendly, at the very least, which says something about their aesthetic as well.

Out the Front (OTF) or Out the Side (OTS)?

Before you get a push button automatic knife, remember that there are both OTF, or out the front, and OTS, or out the side, autos.

If you prefer conventional, traditional form factor, an out the side automatic might be the best option for you, not to mention that, for better or for worse, they are less intimidating to people that don’t carry knives, which may make them more acceptable to carry in some situations.
