A Little About the Hinderer Knives XM-18

Hinderer Knives are renowned in the industry for robust, overbuilt construction and the use of bombproof materials, and perhaps no Hinderer knife is as well-known for this as the XM-18, which is effectively the flagship for the brand.

While the XM-18 was not Rick Hinderer’s first design, it is one of his most influential and most recognizable, and one of the first of his that was intended to serve on a purely functional basis, with no bells or whistles.

In 2006, Rick Hinderer released his first XM-18, giving it the name XM for “experimental model” and 18, in homage to his fire department’s unit number. It is a name that has stuck with the model through its generations.

The first XM-18 was made with thick titanium scales and sported a robust framelock. With the release of the first generation Rick Hinderer immediately began making improvements intended to be released in the second generation.

Among these were improvements to machining that would enhance tolerances and lock geometry, boosting the handling and reliability of the knife. Apparently, users noticed the improvements as soon as they got their hands on the second generation; but it wasn’t over there.

The third generation of the XM-18, released in 2008, was the first to offer the model with a few different blade profiles, among them a Slicer profile with a sweeping belly and a “Spanto”, which was a hybrid of a tanto point and a drop point.

By 2011 Hinderer released the fourth generation of the XM-18, to which improvements were made to tolerances and lock strength. These changes didn’t alter the overall appearance or aesthetic of the fourth generation model, but did result in a smoother action and lockup in addition to more refined fit and finish.

The fifth generation was introduced in 2017, which brought with it one of the biggest improvements made to the knife since its introduction. With the fifth generation came a replaceable steel lockbar insert that enabled a user to replace a component when wear on the lock face affected lockup or lock reliability, without replacing the entire lock side of the knife.

The sixth generation, introduced at Blade Show 2018, brought with it the “Tri-Way Pivot System” giving buyers a choice over whether they wanted a pivot system with ball bearings, phosphor bronze washers, or Teflon. The parts were interchangeable so owners could upgrade the knife as they saw fit.

Around the same time, Hinderer Knives released a variant of the XM-18, the XM-18 “Skinny” which sported a thinner blade stock and slimmer, lighter handles, reducing the overall footprint and weight of the knife.

Through the generations, the XM-18 has been offered with a wide variety of steels, many of them super steels such as S35VN, 20V, M390, and now, even MagnaCut. Variety within the model lineup is another thing that has made the XM-18 not just a legendary knife among those who respect Rick Hinderer’s designs, but among those who appreciate knives in general.

How BTU Sizing Determines Whether Wall AC and Heating Units Actually Work

Most buyers pick wall AC and heating units based on the highest BTU rating they can afford, assuming more power means better performance. It usually means the opposite. An oversized unit short-cycles: it cools or heats a space too fast, shuts off before it can manage humidity properly, and puts unnecessary wear on the compressor […]
