2 Great ZF-5 Mods

The ZF-5, from Zenith Firearms, is a roller-delayed blowback platform modeled on the HK MP5, and which captures most of its details, from the overall profile to the action, down even to the sights.

Given that, it is worth a note that the HK MP 5 itself is, though legendary, a relatively antiquated platform, one that is basically 60 years old. There have been several advances in the field since that time.

Not to mention proud owners like to mod and personalize their equipment to make it feel more like it’s “theirs.” On that note, here are 2 great mods you can make to your ZF-5, and relatively easily.

Upgrade the Handguard

Like the original HK MP 5, the ZF-5 comes with a tropical handguard. There are advantages to this style but there are also pretty strict limitations.

For one, it is a simple design with minimal surface area, and with no mounting slots, it is both easy to clean and comfortable to grip. That is unfortunately where the benefits of its simplicity end.

This makes one of the most popular mods that many ZF-5 owners make, also one of the best. They swap out their ZF-5’s native tropical handguards for aluminum Midwest Industries M-LOK handguards.

These are extremely lightweight handguards with a one-piece design, and offer significantly expanded performance over the tropical handguard of the HK MP5 (or in this case, the ZF-5).

They are easy to install, come with the tools needed, and feature two anti-rotation QD sling swivel sockets. They’re also anodized for corrosion and wear resistance for a lifetime of service, and, if any of you are reading this and have an actual HK MP 5, they’re made in the USA, which makes them 922r compliant.

But back to what makes these a great upgrade for a ZF-5: they have M-LOK slots, which gives shooters a lot of flexibility with what they mount to their ZF-5, whether that involves lights or lasers or other shooting accessories.

That flexibility just isn’t there with the tropical handguard, which brings us to our other top mod.

Add a Vert Grip to the New Handguard

One other mod that ZF-5 owners commonly make to these platforms is the addition of a vertical grip, or vert grip, to the handguard.

This is a mod you can really only make if you swap the handguard, which makes it a great follow-up here.

At any rate, much of the value of adding a vert grip to your ZF-5 is that it improves ergonomics, comfort and control. Even on a short platform like the ZF-5, a vert grip can considerably enhance performance.
