4 Things That Make the Boker Knives Arbolito Hunter (Stag Scales) a Great Knife

Many Boker Knives are excellent, and the company sits squarely on a strong foundation, and is historically known for producing some of the finest knives and bladed tools in the world.

This post will focus the spotlight on one specific Boker knife, the Arbolito Hunter with stag scales, which is like a smaller, toned-down version of the Esculta, but which is nonetheless an excellent knife.

Here are 4 of the main reasons why that is the case.

Böhler N695 Steel

First, and arguably most importantly, this is not a knife that, despite its grand aesthetics, delivers only on aesthetic value alone. That is true of many knives that are made with beautiful scale materials, but it isn’t true here.

This Boker knife sports a blade of Böhler N695 steel, which, if you didn’t know, is like an improved version of N690 steel. If you’re familiar with one but not the other, N695 is basically a version of N690 with more chromium.

While this does take a few points for edge retention, it does result in a steel alloy that is marginally better at resisting corrosion, which here is a huge thing.

For one, this knife is sold with a leather sheath, and you shouldn’t be storing any knife in a leather sheath if it doesn’t offer a high level of corrosion resistance.

But, more importantly, this is intended to be a hunting knife, which means two things: it’s intended to be carried in the field, and it’s intended to be used for processing harvests.

You might actually want a softer steel for a knife carried in the field, as, even though it will need to be sharpened more frequently, you will actually be able to sharpen it when you need to. Other, harder steels that offer better edge retention can be notoriously hard to sharpen. You should not experience that difficulty here.

Also, the higher concentration of chromium makes it better at resisting rust and corrosion, which is good, as these Boker knives will be likely to be exposed to rain, sweat, blood, fat, grease, and other unsavory influences that can and will engender rust and corrosion.

Real Stag Antler Scales

You’re more likely to encounter a “Stag” knife that’s made with Delrin scales, or else some other synthetic material. That is not the case here; these Arbolito Hunter knives are made with real stag antler scales, which offers an unparalleled experience when it comes to warmth and traction in the hand.

Full Tang Construction

It is an egregious practice among some knife manufacturers that make knives with stag antler scales that they insert a knife with a stick tang through the scales.

Here you won’t have that problem, as the full tang is visible at the edges of the knife scales here, and travels the entire way back through the knife handle.

Full tang construction results in a higher-quality knife overall, and one that is much better able to withstand hard use.

A Leather Knife Sheath

Lastly, a classic knife deserves a classic sheath, and the sheath is often a weak point in knife design. In this knife that is not so, as these knives come with leather knife sheaths that carry comfortably and protect the knife even as they make it easier to transport the knife in the field.

A bushcraft knife might sport full tang construction, be made from a high-end steel alloy that resists corrosion, and generally hang with the worst abuse and conditions you can throw at it, but there are still some things you will want to avoid doing with it if you can.  Here are some of them. Throw […]

Sizing a Laboratory Air Dryer for a Few SCFM

Benchtop setups rarely draw much compressed air. Buyers still end up with a laboratory air dryer rated for a machine shop, because the sizing numbers on most spec sheets don’t mean what they look like they mean. Inlet, purge, and outlet flow are three different figures. Sizing to the wrong one either wastes air and […]
