The designator “10 AWG solar PV multi conductor tray cable” is a mouthful no matter how you slice it, and the slice is going to be big.
But what does this mean? Let’s take a closer look.
Dissecting the Jargon
Let’s break down the term to its elements, starting with 10 AWG. This stands for 10 American Wire Gauge, which is a scale used to measure the nominal diameter of electrical wire and cable in North America.
It is a logarithmic scale with an inversely proportional metric, so the smaller the number, the wider the wire is. Also, holding all else equal, the wider the wire or cable, the higher its ampacity and voltage ratings will be. In this case, 10 AWG wire is .101” or 2.588mm.
Solar PV, the next component of the term, is a little bit redundant. “Solar” obviously signifies that the wire can be used in solar energy systems. PV stands for photovoltaic, and means the same thing, since a photovoltaic array is a solar energy system.
It’s the rating that matters here, though, since solar panel cable must be, among other things, resistant not just to UV light in sunlight, but to exposure to the elements, such as temperature, humidity and precipitation.
Multi conductor signifies that the wire or cable in question (in this case cable) has more than one conductor. It’s also worth noting here that “cable” itself indicates that there are multiple common conductors under a single sheath, so again this is somewhat redundant.
The multiple cables could serve many different functions. Since this is solar panel cable, at least one of them is for power distribution. The other (or others) could be used for monitoring and control, or for other uses.
The last part of the term, “tray cable” indicates that the cable in question is suitable for use in cable trays, as opposed to being required to draw it through conduit.
There are many different advantages associated with the use of cable tray as opposed to conduit. First, laying cable in trays is a lot more cost-effective than drawing cable through conduit. There is also a lower risk of cable breakage when using trays.
On top of that, cable tray is highly versatile and configurable, as well as flexible and scalable. It is much better at adapting to changing electrical infrastructure than cable conduit is.
In addition, cable tray enables easier inspection of cables, since the cables are exposed to view. It also makes access easier should the cables ever need to be repaired or replaced.
Lastly, cable tray allows for better heat dissipation than conduit, which can be a big consideration when high voltage and ampacity are involved, which can result in overheating.
So, to go back to the term “10 AWG solar PV multi conductor tray cable” is a type of solar panel cable that can be used in cable tray, to keep things as simple as possible, from a very high level.
