One of the most memorable swords from The Lord of the Rings is Anduril, Aragorn’s sword, given to him before the Battle of the Pelennor Fields by Elrond while Aragorn was encamped with the Rohirrim.
This sword actually has a long and illustrious history, which, if you’re not familiar with it, will be covered in some detail here.
Beginnings as Narsil
Aragorn’s sword Anduril actually was forged many years before the events in The Lord of the Rings. It was forged by a master dwarven smith, Telchar of Nogrod, named Narsil, and given as a gift to King Elendil of Arnor and Gondor.
During the War of the Last Alliance between elves and men, Elendil carried the sword Narsil against Sauron and his forces during the seminal battle. Sauron slew not only Elendil but Gil-Galad, the elven king who fought alongside him, before breaking Narsil.
Elendil’s son, Isildur, took up the hilt-shard of Narsil and cut the ring of power from Sauron’s hand, taking it as weregild for his slain father, as well as his brother Anarion, who was also killed in the fighting.
What happened to Isildur after is a story for Tolkien fans, but as for those here for the history of Aragon’s sword, the elves took the shards of Narsil back to Rivendell, where they remained for a time.
Becoming Anduril
In the Third Age, the elves remade the sword Narsil into Anduril, giving it a new name that meant “Flame of the West,” which was carried by Aragorn. The new sword was made with Elvish inscriptions of its lineage as well as designs of the Seven Stars, the sun and the moon.
In the books, Aragorn carries this sword from the beginning; when “Strider” first meets the hobbits in Bree, he displays the hilt shard of Narsil before he has it remade with the help of the elves.
Either way, once Anduril was remade, Aragorn carried it consistently throughout the saga, keeping it his constant companion, loath to part with it for even a moment, as he does in Edoras before he meets with King Theoden of Rohan.
In the movies, it was Aragorn’s possession of this sword that enabled him to command the dead army that gave Rohan and Gondor the ability to prevail during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
