About the Rambo Knife from First Blood Part II: Is It Practical?

It’s impossible to see Rambo II and not remember the knife the titular character carries throughout much of the movie. It’s a huge bowie knife with a sawback spine, carried primarily as a fighting knife.

But is this type of knife really an effective tool in the field, or is it just something that collectors of famous movie props should pursue? Let’s peel back the layers.

What Sort of Knife Is This?

First off, if you were to give this Rambo knife a name, according to the pattern of knife that it actually is, it would indubitably be a bowie knife.

Bowie knives are characterized by large blades sometimes in excess of 12 inches, and generally have clipped points. This feature makes the blade much more effective at thrusting and piercing maneuvers.

Even so, bowie knives have such large, heavy blades that they can also be used to great effect for slashing and chopping.

The knife carried by Rambo in Rambo II is a large bowie style knife that fits this bill. So let’s take a closer look at a Rambo knife patterned after the one used in the film, reproduced by BUDK.

By the Features

BUDK’s Rambo II knife, (Stallone Signature Edition) sports a 10-inch, 420 J2 stainless steel blade; overall the knife is 15.5 inches.

The blade has a long, straight edge, a clipped point, and is handsomely engraved with Stallone’s signature (the series is limited).

The back of the blade has sawback serrations. These make this tool not only useful as a knife, but for managing materials that would typically balk at a straight edge, such as wood or plastic.

As a survival knife, this is also an excellent choice because in this case, with push-tang construction as well as a hollow handle that contains a survival kit.

The cord-wrapped handle offers a solid grip in a wide range of conditions and has plenty of room for basic essentials like thread and sewing needs, basic tackle, cordage, matches, and other survival gear.

The butt cap of the handle also contains a compass, which assists with orientation and is just one more feature that adds value to this design.

Lastly, it comes with a classy leather sheath that has a retention strap to secure the knife, and which adds aesthetics and functionality to the package.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, this bowie-style Rambo knife is extremely functional. It will serve well as a survival knife, a camp knife, a hunting knife, or in other capacities, and there are few tasks at which it wouldn’t excel when applied.
