An OTS vs. OTF Knife: Which Auto Is Right for You

In the world of automatic knives, there are two main configurations: out the side knives, also known as OTS knives, and out the front knives, also known as OTF knives.

There are relative advantages and disadvantages to each of these classes of automatic knives – also known as autos.

Why an OTS Knife?

OTS, or out the side knives, have the blade mounted in the same basic configuration as other conventional folding knives, with a pivot point around which the blade swings.

If it’s all about utility, and you only need the single edge (which is the common configuration with an OTS knife) then this pattern is better for you.

An OTS knife might also be preferable for you if you like the traditional pattern of an out the side folder, though that is not an advantage in the most specific sense of the word.

Why an OTF Knife?

In an OTF knife configuration, the blade comes out the front of the handle and runs, usually on rails or in a channel. Like an OTS knife, it should have a strong lock.

The OTF knife configuration can be a little better in closer quarters, as you don’t need a lot of clearance to get the blade deployed.

Moreover, you can deploy the blade with a strong, full grip on the handle, as you don’t need to clear the side to get the blade out.

An OTF knife will customarily have a double-edged blade, which can be utilitarian if you keep one edge sharper than the other – one for fine work and the other for more demanding applications.

All in all, it ultimately comes down to what you prefer. There aren’t a lot of big reasons that really differentiate the two beyond how the blade deploys.

The Advantages of Auto Knives

Now let’s cover some of the broader advantages of automatic knives, or autos, in general, as they offer some considerable advantages over conventional, manual folders.

One advantage of an auto is that it only takes one hand to operate, and there’s no learning curve. You basically push a button and the blade is deployed. They’re better in close or cramped quarters, too.

The other thing about an auto knife is the speed. You can deploy the knife very fast – as fast or faster than you’d be able to do with a knife that had only a flipper tab or thumb studs.

Lastly, the locks of auto knives have significantly improved over the years, and many auto knives now boast locks as strong as anything else in the industry – or at least close to it.
