Why an M9 Bayonet Should Be Part of Your Kit

There are survival knives, and then there’s the M9 bayonet. Now, not to suggest that the M9 bayonet is the “best” survival knife out there, but it makes a good run for it, just for downright versatility.

Here’s just about everything the M9 bayonet (from BudK) offers.

Rock-Solid Reliability

This M9 replica boasts a 7” stainless blade with a non-reflective finish, along with a non-slip TPU handle with deep grooves. It’s built tough and will need minimal maintenance, unlike other knives with non-stainless blades. This is definitely a very tough tool, made more attractive by the extremely reasonable price, especially compared to other survival and camp knives.

A Partially Serrated Spine

The M9 has deep, aggressive serrations in the spine, which are perfect for cutting through wood, coarse rope, and other materials that won’t flinch when subjected to a blade’s straight edge. Incorporating them into the spine has also enabled the design to make full use of its straight edge, too, without crowding it.

Wire-Cutting Abilities

One of the more innovative features of the M9 bayonet is that there is a hole machined into the blade near the point which corresponds to a lug on the base of the sheath. When you attach the blade via this lug, you can use the knife like a pair of shears, with the swedge along the top of the spine serving as the cutting jaw. This is a very capable configuration, too – strong enough to cut through fairly thick wire, and very effective for the purpose.

A Tough Nylon Sheath

The sheath is another area in which the M9 doesn’t cheap out. This model comes with a very rugged nylon belt sheath which can mount to your belt, a pack, or through other configurations, giving you a great deal of flexibility in how you carry this knife. It also has a small pouch integrated into the design at the front of the sheath for carrying sundry small items. Plus, it offers good retention and unlike a leather sheath, requires no maintenance or break-in.

Many Mounting Options

Not just the sheath, but the bayonet itself. Not only does it have a muzzle ring incorporated into the crossguard, but the clip on the pommel fits a standard bayonet lug. Use it as a utility knife, a camp knife, a wirecutter, or a bayonet; it offers that versatility.

A Built-in Sharpening Stone

Lastly, the reverse side of the sheath features a sharpening stone built into the design, which means that you can’t accidentally forget a stone, as long as you have your sheath with you. Anytime your knife gets dull in the field, you’ll have recourse.

Explore This and Other Bayonets Online

While the M9 is a great bayonet pattern, if you’re interested in learning more about others, like the M7, M1 Garand bayonet, or even a classic historical pattern like the M1905, take a look at what BudK offers. They carry these and many other historical replicas in their catalog.
