Planning for a Food Bank Donation Drop-Off

Food insecurity is an issue that affects people in every single ZIP Code in the United States, so believe it or not, you have neighbors that have gone hungry before.

This makes it an issue that’s close to home for most of us, and a great way to get involved and combat the issue is by donating food.

With that said, you want to make sure you do things by the books so that everything goes as smoothly as possible. Here are some high-level tips to make sure you’re prepared for a food bank donation drop-off.

Make Sure You’re Planning on Donating Appropriate Foodstuffs

First things first, different food banks have different requirements for what they will and will not accept. Some may only accept dry and canned goods, others may accept fresh, unprepared foods.

Make sure you check the food bank website to make sure what you’re giving will be accepted – otherwise it’s a waste.

Also, be cognizant of the fact that it is easier to store and transport dry and canned goods than fresh foods, making them more cost-effective as a solution for feeding those in need.

Be Aware of Location and Hours

Naturally, you may be able to donate food at a food bank donation drop-off center or warehouse, but there may be other options as well.

Check the organization’s website for instructions on how to make donations or drop-offs. There may be an agency closer to home that will make it easier for you to give your donation.

Also, obviously, check the hours of operation of the center or warehouse as you won’t want to make a trip only to find out they are closed when you arrive!

Make Sure You’re Ready with an Appointment If Needed

While you’re on the organization’s website, make sure you read all instructions associated with dropping off a donation. Some centers may require you to make an appointment beforehand.

If so, make sure you plan appropriately so that you’re both ready when the time comes and there won’t be any curveballs when you show up to make a donation.

Busy Schedule? See If the Food Bank Will Pick up Your Donation

Another thing to check on the organization website is if there are any alternatives to making a drop-off. Some food banks will actually arrange to come pick up donations rather than making you deliver them.

Also, if you are reading this on behalf of a retailer and are looking for ways to reduce food waste, look into Retail Rescue programs such as those operated by Philabundance. There may be a way to coordinate pick-ups that will save more food and save you the trouble of having to drop it off.

No Food Bank Donation Drop-Off Centers Near You? Make a Donation of Money Instead

If you landed here because you want to make a difference but you don’t have food to give, consider giving money to a local food bank instead. It’s easier to do, can be done without having to make a delivery, and every penny counts toward ending food insecurity.
