The Perfect Beginner’s Tasks for Your First Sewing Machine Project

You love being creative, and you think sewing is the perfect medium for you to express it. But every creative project needs to start somewhere, and sometimes beginner projects, no matter how seemingly simple, can be difficult to complete in a satisfying manner.

The key to building confidence and skills is selecting the right first project. Here are three beginner-friendly projects to consider, along with their pros and cons that can help you choose the ideal beginner’s first sewing project.

Simple Tote Bag

A fabric tote bag is one of the easiest beginner’s projects. It’s easy to construct, and only requires basic straight seams and minimal pattern pieces. You only need basic sewing skills here, but it could help you practice cutting fabric, sewing straight lines, and creating sturdy seams. You only need the following materials:

  • fabric (cotton or canvas is best for first-timers)
  • thread matching the fabric
  • basic sewing tools (scissors, pins, measuring tape)

However, this project might be limited when it comes to improving specific sewing techniques.

This project doesn’t introduce more advanced techniques like zippers or buttons. Also,  the simplicity might be less exciting for those looking for a bit of a challenge.

No matter what kind of sewing machine you use, you need to make sure they have the following features for this project. The Janome sewing machine is great for beginners, and often carries these features. You need to use the following  for this project:

  • the straight stitch, essential for creating the bag’s seams.
  • adjustable stitch length, reinforces seams and adds decorative topstitching.

Pillowcase

Like the tote bag, a pillowcase is straightforward and quick to sew. You can choose various fabrics and patterns to match your décor. And like the tote bag, you only need fabric, thread, and basic sewing tools. Doing this project can help you improve on how to measure and cut fabric. It also improves your sewing skills in creating consistent seams.

However, this doesn’t introduce intermediate skills like pleating or applique. And while functional, pillowcases are less exciting than wearable items. If you have a Janome sewing machine, look for the following sewing machine features for this project:

  • straight stitch for main seams.
  • overlock or zigzag stitch, for finishing raw edges and preventing fraying.
  • free arm, so you can sew the hem around the opening of the pillowcase.

Drawstring Bag

This is a good beginner’s project that involves straight sewing and simple hemming. This teaches beginners how to create a casing for the drawstring, an essential skill for many projects. As always, you only need the following materials: fabric (cotton or linen works well), thread, drawstring cord or ribbon, and basic sewing tools.

Even if this project might seem more complicated than the first two projects, it doesn’t cover more complex sewing methods. It is also limited to smaller items unless scaled up, which might require more fabric and skilful cutting precision. This project requires the following sewing machine features:

  • straight stitch for assembling the bag.
  • buttonhole stitch used to create neat openings for the drawstring (some machines may not have this feature, so make sure your machine has it)
  • free arm, used to sew the casing and the smaller sections of the bag.

Make Your First Sewing Project a Simple Success

These might seem to be simple sewing projects, but for any creative endeavor, you need to make sure that you become an expert in the most basic of skills. And with the right sewing machine, you can choose a project that excites you and you feel comfortable doing.

There are other simple projects too, but these first three offer an excellent starting point for beginners. They require minimal materials and utilize basic sewing machine features, making them accessible and rewarding.
