Thinking of Moving to the Cayman Islands? Here Are Some Things You’ll Need to Know

The ambition to own a personal slice of paradise is in no way a rare one. For some, this means establishing a goal of buying property in the Cayman Islands and becoming a resident.

After all, the islands enjoy modern infrastructure, safe communities, and sunny weather throughout almost all of the year. There’s so much to love!

And, while Cayman Islands government services are efficient and thorough, there are still some things you’ll want to know before moving here so you can be better prepared.

Access to the Islands
The Cayman Islands are a short boat ride or flight from each other, and all three islands are serviced by airports.

Both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac are serviced by international airports (Owen Roberts International Airport and Charles Kirkconnell International Airport); Little Cayman is serviced by Edward Bodden Little Cayman Airfield.

Flights from Grand Cayman to Houston, Texas are just over 3 hours on average whereas the flight from Grand Cayman to Orlando, Florida, is under 2.

Getting Your Personal Belongings There
If you’re a permanent resident of another country and are going to stay in the Cayman Islands for at least one year, you may be eligible to import your personal belongings duty-free.

However, it is important to note that new items and vehicles do not qualify for duty-free import and that you must move your belongings either before you arrive or within 6 months of taking up residence.

Finance
The Cayman Islands are home to numerous banks and other financial institutions, including but not limited to Cayman National Bank, Scotiabank, and FirstCaribbean International Bank.

You should establish an account as soon as you arrive; be prepared with an official photo ID, verification of employment and salary, proof of funds, and professional and financial references.

Education and Healthcare
The Cayman Islands are home to numerous medical and educational institutions. Be aware that Cayman Islands law requires health insurance coverage, and also mandates that Cayman Islands employers must also offer health insurance coverage.

While the Cayman Islands also offer numerous public and private schools, it is important to note that expatriate children are not eligible to attend government schools, and the waiting lists for private schools can be quite long.

If you plan on living in the Cayman Islands, you should begin the enrollment process for your children as soon as you’ve made the decision to move.

Driving
All new residents must pass a driving test before being issued a Cayman Islands driver’s license, and a license is required before vehicles can be insured.

Start Your Search for Cayman Property for Sale
If you’re serious about moving, whether for work or simply to start a new life, the next step is to start exploring Cayman property for sale.

While the Cayman Islands welcome new residents and there are no restrictions on foreign ownership of property, it’s best to navigate the process through an experienced member of CIREBA with extensive knowledge of the local market for Cayman Islands real estate.
