4 Reasons to Keep Your Glock Mags Clean

There are several reasons that Glocks are among the most popular handguns in this country – as well as in the world.

All the same, popularity isn’t a precursor to longevity with improper care. You keep your Glock mag, so why wouldn’t you keep your Glock mags clean?

Yet, there are gun owners that don’t. That’s something that should change. Here are a few reasons that you should keep your mags clean – they make the argument clearly.

Smoother Feeding

An accumulation of fouling and dust in the magazine can gum up the follower and make your cartridges dirty.

Cartridges that are dirty don’t feed well. A very dirty Glock magazine can and will cause jams at some point or other.

Granted, a dirty feed ramp or chamber is much worse, but that isn’t a defense of dirty gun magazines.

Just make sure you keep your Glock mags clean – end of story.

A Stronger, Longer-Lasting Mag Spring

Glock mags are made with strong magazine springs, and they’re pretty tough, but not completely immune to corrosion.

Fouling has the potential to accelerate corrosion, as does other debris. Disassembling the magazine, cleaning the spring, and giving it a light anti-corrosion protection will protect the spring against rust.

When cleaning, apply a very thin coat of oil to the spring to help serve as a minor hedge against corrosion.

Just make sure you aren’t actually lubricating magazines because they don’t need it. In fact, excess oil or liquid lubrication actually serves as a sticky magnet that will attract dust, oil, lint, and all the other fun stuff that does a mag no good.

Longer Overall Mag Life

Aside from jams, this is probably the most compelling reason to keep your Glock mags clean.

If you let oil, grime, fouling and dust accumulate on or in your magazine, it will accelerate wear on your follower and feed lips.

The more you wear these sensitive components, the more quickly they will fail. And even if they don’t start causing jams right away, they’re going to experience a shorter service life.

Keeping your Glock mags clean will keep them shooting for longer.

It’s Better for Your Glock, Too

One more thing. If you let fouling accumulate on the outside of your magazine, it can adversely affect the mag catch in your gun by wearing it out.

Which means slowly your mag charges and drops will get grittier, and eventually they might outright malfunction or cease functioning as intended.

If your mag catch begins to wear because of a mag that’s in bad shape, then you will have a much bigger problem than just replacing a mag that doesn’t function right.
