3 Tips for Salon-Like Hair at Home

Are you tired of bad hair days? As much as we all want to have the hair we see celebrities sporting in TV commercials and red carpet events, not everyone has the time or money to regularly visit a salon and receive a full pampering. Fortunately, you can achieve salon-like results at home for a fraction of the price, with the right products and techniques. Here’s how:

Cleanse and condition your hair properly
You may think you know how to use shampoo and conditioner on your hair. But are you sure you’re doing it right? Many people simply lather up and rinse so that they can be in and out of the shower as quickly as possible. This is far from The Proper Way.

When you don’t cleanse and condition your hair right, you leave dirt, debris and buildup behind that prevent your hair from feeling completely clean. This also hampers your products’ effectiveness, as they’re unable to penetrate the hair strands and scalp.

Replicate your salon shampoo experience by using warm to room temperature water, if you can bear it. Don’t go too hot or too cold, lest you overstimulate your hair’s sebaceous glands. This would then prompt them to release more sebum, leading to greasy hair. Warm water is also better for opening up the hair cuticles for better product penetration and absorption.

Shampoo should only be applied to the scalp and the upper part of the hair. A gentle massage using your fingers should remove all that buildup. For an extra clean feeling, use The Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo from Oribe, available on Beauty Sense. It’s the very same product used at all Oribe partners in the country, carried by high-end professional salons and recommended by top stylists.

Conditioner, on the other hand, should never be applied to the scalp–not even close. Doing so can weigh your hair down and make it look limp. Instead, only use conditioner from the middle part of your hair strands, taking special care at the ends. Leave your conditioner on for a couple of minutes before rinsing with cool to cold water.

Protect your hair from the heat
If you’ve ever had your hair styled at a salon before, you’ll notice that the staff makes an effort to dry it before using a curling iron or a flat straightener. That’s because wet hair is fragile and much more susceptible to heat damage.

At home, you can protect your hair and keep it feeling soft and healthy just by following that example. If you don’t have the time or patience to wait for your hair to dry completely, use a heat protectant product. Oribe’s Balm d’Or Heat Styling Shield was created specifically for this purpose, shielding hair not just from thermal damage but also from harsh UV rays.

Use treatment as needed
Religiously shampooing and conditioning your hair is not enough to maintain healthy hair. It will, sooner or later, need additional vitamins and nutrients to stay smooth and moisturized. If you have bleached or colored hair, you’ll definitely want to give it extra TLC.

There are plenty of hair treatments that you can use to refresh your hair and give it a boost. Choose one for your hair type or to address a specific concern, and simply follow the instructions on how often you should use them.
