3 Golden Rules for Taking Care of Your Lingerie

Treating yourself to nice lingerie is one of the best ways to lift your mood. When they look great and feel amazing, you look great and feel amazing in them, too.

Good lingerie isn’t just delicate, it can also be expensive, which is why taking care of it properly should be one of your top priorities. Doing so will help preserve your lingerie longer, allowing you to enjoy it more. When it comes to underwire lingerie and other specialty bras, laundry can get complicated, fast. Here are the rules you need to live by to make sure your underwire lingerie and other delicate pieces keep looking and feeling as good as the day you bought them:

Know when to wash them
Putting your delicates through more washes than they need is a cardinal sin. The fabrics used in lingerie tend to be very thin and fragile, and they’ll weaken much faster when subjected to unnecessary abuse.

In general, you can wear a bra maybe two, up to three times before washing it. This doesn’t mean wearing the same bra for days in a row, though. According to experts, rotating your bras is better for preserving their shape. This also gives the elastics some time to rebound.

Hand-wash > Machine-wash
For delicate items such as bras and panties, hand-washing is the way to go. It’s just gentler on your pieces than putting them through the washing machine.

However, “hand-washing” in this case doesn’t mean laboring over a basin and spending hours scrubbing them. All you have to do is leave them in the sink with some cold water and a bit of soap, agitate them lightly for a few minutes, and then leave them to soak for up to an hour. After that, just rinse them out and allow them to air-dry. Never put your lingerie in the dryer! Doing so can warp them beyond recognition and they’ll start to deteriorate before long. Underwire lingerie, such as the ones sold by Anita, should never be tumble dried. The brand recommends hanging it or laying it flat to dry.

If you’re absolutely pressed for time or just don’t want to put in that much effort, you can toss them into the washing machine instead. Don’t leave them in there loose, though! Collect your lingerie in a mesh washing bag specifically made for this purpose. You can then use a delicate cycle with mild detergent.

Store them carefully
To best maintain the cup shape of your lingerie, store them cup-side up, folding the straps behind them and clasping them up. You can then stack them flat on top of each other to save space in your drawers.

As for panties, the best way to store them is to lay them flat. If that takes up too much drawer space, you can fold them carefully.
