3 Bra Mistakes That You’re Probably Making (and How to Fix Them)

Buying a new bra seems like a straightforward enough process, right? After getting your measurements taken, you go to the racks and pick out something in your size. That’s how things should go, anyway.

However, an alarming number of women aren’t actually wearing the right bra for their needs, and you might be one of them. Read on below for some of the most common bra mistakes to see if you’re making any of them:

You buy a new bra that fits on the tightest hook
One of the easiest mistakes to avoid when you’re shopping for a new bra has to do with how it fits around your torso. You should know which hook should be fastened when you first get them. Specifically, it should fit perfectly when you fasten the loosest hook, not the tightest one.

Why? Because bras stretch. After multiple wears and washes, you’ll find that the elastics on them will be inevitably lower, causing them to loosen around your bust and torso. New bras, therefore, should be fitted on the loosest hook so that they can be adjusted as time goes on.

You don’t go for regular fittings
When was the last time that you had yourself fitted for a bra? Most women operate under the impression that the bra size that they get the first time they have their measurements taken, is their size forever. However, women’s bodies and breast shapes are constantly changing, not only from year to year, but sometimes from one month to the next.

It’s always a good idea to retake your measurements whenever you shop for a new bra, or at least once every 6-12 months. This ensures that you always get bras in the right size every time you make a new purchase.

You don’t wear the right bra for your outfit
Contrary to popular belief, there are certain styles of bras that should be worn with different outfits and activities. If the last thing you want is a visible strap or a bit of lace peeking out from under your clothes, you’ll want to pair the right bra to whatever you’re wearing.

Wireless padded bras are good for daily wear, and can be worn with just about any outfit. They offer just the right amount of support and coverage for regular activities, such as shopping for groceries or walking your dog. They’re unbeatable in terms and comfort, and are great when worn with fitted tops and dresses. You can find an excellent selection of wireless padded bras on the website of Anita Since 1886, a brand that specializes in undergarments and lingerie for women.

Wireless padded bras and also underwire padded bras are also sometimes called “t-shirt bras” or “daily bras”.

Balconette bras have wide-set straps and cups that are cut straight across the top, revealing more of the upper portion of the breasts. They’re best when worn with broad neck tops or dresses, eliminating the visible bra strap.

Strapless bras do not have any straps, hence the name. You’ll want to reach for them if you want to wear anything that bares your shoulders, such as tube tops, tank tops, or off-shoulder tops.

If you want to wear a halter top or a tank top but still want the security of wearing a bra with straps, you may want to consider a bra with detachable straps. These types of bras give you the flexibility to arrange the bra’s straps to your liking so that they aren’t visible, and allow for multiple configurations. These bras are also sometimes called “convertible bras”.

Finally, sports bras are an essential piece for the gym. When you work out, your breasts need to be adequately supported to keep them from bouncing or moving around excessively. Sports bras provide that support and are also usually made out of sweat-wicking materials that will keep you comfortable while you work out.
