2 Use Cases for Electric Fishing Reels

We get it, not every fisherman is going to want to use an electric fishing reel, and there are some situations (many, actually) in which it’s better to do things manually. This is a sport, after all, and working the lure and playing the fish are skills that make the catching all that more enjoyable.

All the same, there are some situations in which an electric fishing reel might be a better bet than a conventional spinning or casting reel. Here are two of them, along with the reasons why.

Precise Depth Control

You can be good about depth control when you’re fishing, but an electric fishing reel is better. That’s just the fact. Counting revolutions of the spool or using the line indicator printed on it is one thing, but an electric fishing reel with a line counter will literally tell you how much line is paid out, and therefore how deep your presentation is, with no guesswork whatsoever.

Now the reason this is important is that sometimes a matter of a few feet can make all the difference between a successful day on the water and a bust. Granted, there’s some trial and error you can do to be more sure of where the fish are, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes you need to be very precise about how deep you are.

Being in the strike zone will catch you fish. Sometimes being out of it will catch you fish, too, if they are very aggressive. But when fish are holding at a specific depth and feeling skittish, when only finesse presentations are effective, you need to get your bait in front of them. That means, among other things, being precise with depth control.

Fill the Cooler Faster

The fact that it’s tiring working a heavy metal slow pitch jig is one thing, and it’s something that an electric fishing reel can help with. The economy with which you fill the cooler is another, and it’s much more material than the sport of working the jig.

If you’re solely out there to put meat on the table and the catching aspect of the endeavor is entirely secondary to how much produce you can come up with, then it should go without saying that an electric fishing reel is better, especially if you need to drop down deep to catch the fish.

An electric fishing reel, a good one at least, will outfish even the strongest, fastest fisherman, and have you swing more fish over the rail faster and more easily.
